Large evergreen shrub to small tree. Height is 6 to 30 feet and the width is to 10 feet. Full to part sun. Purple, lavender, violet, or rarely white flowers in drooping clusters in spring. Red seed pods are attractive but are poisonous to humans. It has a high heat tolerance. It likes neutral to alkaline sand, loam, clay, caliche, or limestone soils. Native to Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico.
